The act of entertaining; agreeable occupation for the mind; diversion; amusement: the entertainments at the ball were elaborate. Something affording pleasure or amusement, such as a performance: A satirical play on social backstabbing and murder is an excellent form of entertainment. The word entertain comes from the Medieval Latin intertenere, from tenere meaning to hold inside. It is possible to entertain on almost any scale, from a single person choosing private entertainment from the now vast array of prerecorded products, through banquets adapted for two, to performances designed for thousands or even the global population. The famous story of Scheherazade, a professional storyteller, has been turned into an orchestral piece, a film and innovative video games.
