The lottery was later used to raise money to finance religious congregations and the military. It became popular among the general public as well.
Lotteries were popular in England and the United States. However, in 1621 the House of Commons banned the use of lotteries in the UK. A few years later, the Louisiana lottery was abolished. Some bishops believed that lotteries were an unfair way of exploiting the poor.
By the early nineteenth century, however, the lottery was seen as an appropriate means of raising funds for public projects. In fact, Alexander Hamilton wrote that lotteries should be kept simple.
Several towns in Flanders and Burgundy held public lotteries to raise money for the poor. The French and Indian War brought about many colonies that used the lottery to raise money for troops.
In the late 19th century, private lotteries were widespread in the United States. Some religious communities in the US also used the lottery to raise money. In the 1832 census, there were 420 lotteries in eight states.
