The Importance of Relationships

Relationships

Relationships are a huge part of our lives. They add meaning, and can make us happier. Having positive relationships also makes it easier to take risks and pursue dreams, because we know we have people who will be supportive through the ups and downs of life.

Healthy relationships require open communication. This means talking to each other regularly, and listening too. It is important to be clear about what you are trying to say, and double check that your partner has understood what you have said. It is also helpful to be curious about the other person’s perspective, even if you don’t agree with it.

Physical intimacy is another component of a relationship. This doesn’t always mean sex, but it can include hugging, cuddling, and sleeping together. It’s also helpful to be able to pick up on your partner’s nonverbal cues, or “body language”. This will allow you to better understand how they are feeling, and to respond accordingly.

Many people enjoy dating casually, and may have many different relationships that they are involved in at the same time. This allows them to explore their interests and develop their communication and other relationship skills without the commitment of a long-term romantic or sexual relationship. Other people prefer to become emotionally and sexually committed to one person, in a monogamous or nonmonogamous relationship, and may eventually get married. Regardless of the type of relationship, all forms of relationships contribute to our sense of well-being.
